Occupations Carpenter, Walsh Jesuit maintenance man and girls basketball coach. Education: Earned a teaching degree from the University of Akron 21 years after graduating from Tallmadge High School.

Hometown: Tallmadge. He and his wife live on the same sixacre property Smith played on as a child. He has added a driving range and a 1.4 million gallon pond.

Record at Walsh Jesuit: 193-82 in 12 seasons.

Hobbies: Plays for the Akron Blues in the Roy Hobbs Baseball League; plants as many as 800 flowers on his property each year.

Decorative office: Smith's basketball office is a walk-in collage. Walls are packed with newspaper clippings, photographs, cards from current and former players, memorable box scores and a thousand memories. The walls outside the office are adorned with an array of pictures and trophies in wooden cases and shadowboxes Smith built.

"I love all this stuff and I think the kids like it, too," he said. I still have my high school baseball cap hanging in my office at home."
