Tim joined Recon Platoon in December 1966, part of HHC, 2/503, 173rd Abn Bde. We had a base camp (Camp Zinn) near Bien Hoa about thrity miles from Saigon.

22 Jan 67 we made contact with the enemy and lost one and had two wounded. On 5 Feb 67 our platoon engaged a company of VC resulting in a firefight which lasted several hours. We had five wounded and killed seven VC by body count. It was estimated several more VC were killed but their comrades had dragged their bodies off. The attached picture was taken the following day as we inventoried the captured weapons.

Picture taken as we inventoried the captured
weapons. This is a picture of the entire platoon with the exception of those who had been wounded the day before. You can see Tim on the left toward the center.

On 10 Feb 67, Recon had stopped for a break and Tim's squad was on an outside perimeter. VC tripped some trip flares set out and a brief firefight ensued, wounding two of our guys. Tim was hit by one round in the left temple and later, when the area was secured and a medevac chopper landed, I walked him to the chopper. He did manage to walk on his own, although he appeared dazed and didn't talk. Only a small trickle of blood was noticeable. Later, we learned he had died 22 Feb 67 at Walter Reed back in the world.

Memorial service. Tim peformed his duty well and is remembered. All gave some and some gave all.

Tim and I did pal around during our high school years. In fact during our Jr. Year we decided to skip 8th period. We jumped in my 1960 Studebaker Lark and got as far as the light at East Ave. While we had a red light, an older gentleman on his way to play golf ran off the highway and T boned the Studebaker on the left side. No one was hurt bad, but Tim and I were busted. We were given two weeks after school detention.

I had heard about Tim Kranshan being killed in February of 1967, and when I went to Viet Nam at the end of May, 1968, I flew into Bien Hoa Air Base. For the first time in months, we had a rocket attack, that first day I was in Viet Nam, and I knew Tim had been killed by a sniper in Bien Hoa while lighting a cigarette. All I could think of while the explosions were going on, "Oh great! What if two guys from Tallmadge Class of 1966 were killed in the same place on the other side of the world."

Blessings,
Don Bendell

I thought you might be interested in this picture that I took in Washington, D.C. last year. One of the most sobering thing I have ever seen is that wall of black stone with the thousands of Viet Nam war casualties. I located Tim's name and took a picture.
