Although I didn't get to graduate with the class of 66, it has always been my class. When my parents moved away I was heartbroken and cried almost my whole Senior year. Since then I have grown up(some).

I graduated from Ohio University. I have been in Ga since 1976 and worked in Apparel Mfg. I am currently working for a small company as Purchasing Mgr of RefrigiWear, Inc in the N. GA mountains. I live in a log house in the woods with lots of hiking trails and a river walking distance, where we kayak. I married a great guy, Craig, and have a daughter Jillian. I have a wonderful life.

I wish I could see or talk with all my friends from Tallmadge. My fondest memories are of those years with the Funny Company and the class of 1966 .

James Measell

James Measel -chemistry and speech teacher

I was a teacher at Tallmadge for this class' junior and senior years, so I feel like a member of the class of '66, too. My wife Brenda and I were married in August 1964, just a few weeks before I began teaching at Tallmadge. Tallmadge was my first teaching job (at 22), so I'm not much older than the students! After Tallmadge, I went to the University of Illinois for M. A. (1968) and Ph. D. (1970) degrees in speech communication. I became a college professor (teaching, researching and writing) for 27 years at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Brenda and I have four children--twins Barbara (lawyer) and Nancy (office manager) and sons Karl (real estate sales) and Andrew (police officer). Brenda and I share a love for glassware made in the Ohio Valley and Midwest. I retired "early" (at 55) from Wayne State in 1997 and am now associate historian at the Fenton Art Glass Co. in Williamstown, West Virginia. The Fenton firm will be 100 in May 2005, so we are very busy with celebration plans.

I certainly want to attend the THS '66 reunion in 2006. Whenever I am in the Akron area, I always make time to go around the traffic circle in Tallmadge.

Best wishes,

James Measell
chemistry/speech teacher THS 1964-66

This was sent to me by Linda (Leone) Papoi from a March 2005 Beacon Journal Article.

I just stumbled across you class of 66 site while trying to find information about my upcoming Tallmadge High School 30 year reunion (class of 1975). I was amused to find photos of two of my sisters, Kathy and Carol Hottensmith. I forwarded the site to Kathy and my brother David, in the event they were unaware of it. It's amazing that so many of your teachers were also mine. It brings back a ton of old memories and I think it's really neat what you have done.

Could you possibly provide any information regarding my class reunion? I haven't been back since the 10-year and would sure like to go this year.

Thank you. Mark H. Hottensmith

Hello, my name is Tim Hill and I am a 1970 graduate of Tallmadge High School. I chanced upon your Class of 1966 web site and I have enjoyed the trip down memory lane. There are of course numerous sophomores and juniors from the Class of 1967 and 1968 that I remember. I delivered Beacon Journal newpapers in the Munroe Road area in 1967-1968 and there was a Colosetti on my route, though my memory is now hazy as to where the Colosetti house was located. Anyway, thanks for all your efforts in creating this time capsule. As far as I know, the Class of 1966 web site is the only Tallmadge High School graduating class available in such great detail on the web. The number of 1966 graduates who have passed away is quite sobering. Also the number of faculty members no longer with us is another reality check. I recall many of them. John, I still live in Tallmadge and I drop my 16 year old daughter off at Tallmadge High School each schoolday morning. She will be a senior next year. My son graduated last year. Each time I'm in the THS parking lot I take a quick look at the Blue Devil enshrined on the standing cement marker at the entrance to the school. The base of that cement monument must go down quite deep to have survived all these years. It is of course ironic that any one of those tedious lectures or study halls that we thought would never end would be the most fascinating of experiences if we could materialize our present self there for only one day. Thanks again.

So glad to have found this site. It's been a nostalgic stroll down Memory Lane. I remember several 66-69 Alumni and or their siblngs closer to my age; the Schrum kids are my cousins (whom I haven’t seen in forever) and some neighbors and friends were Linda Dockery, Jeff Gooch, Sue Milhoan, Paula Marshall, Kim Stevic ('67-68) and Allison (Keener) Ilg (my best friend in Jr. High-present and the Godmother of my daughter), not to forget Debbie Hunsicker, Jamie Scalera, Lynn D'Agostine, Lori Schiffler, Pam Gallagher...lol, I could go on and on. My parents were very involved with the Tallmadge Jaycees, so I earned some brownie points and volunteered now and then, such as at the Dunking Booth at the Summit County Fair and the Saturday Moms-Day-Out Childcare...I remember my first Babysitting job was for the Bill Laymon Family. Some of my fondest memories, of course were made with my friends from school (Overdale and Central Jr. High) and my neighborhood in Tallmadge.

I have quite a few happy memories of Tallmadge, where I grew up, (our family home was at 19_? West Howe Road-a white ranch style home they had built) but I ended up finishing my Senior Year (1970) at Hazelwood Central High School, (Florissant, MO.) Amidst many of my protests and tears, I had to leave Tallmadge in June of '67, before my Freshman year, as my dad (now :( deceased) was transferred with Goodyear to St. Louis, MO. It got better as time passed, as I made many friends and met my husband to be; I, ending up quite active in my new school. I was lucky to be a member of the Majorettes with our H.S. Marching Band in MO, which was great fun and I did some of the best work of my younger years, in my Art, Seamstress and Fashion Design classes.

After High School in MO, I married and traveled with my husband (an Army Sgt.) to the Presidio of S.F.,CA. where we lived for almost 2 years. We picnicked with our "Army family" in Golden Gate Park with all the hippies, went to Wine and Cheese parties...it was so liberating at such a young age. I gave birth to our first son there and after settling back in MO. I had a daughter in ‘76 and then another son in ’82.

Due to my husbands job transfers, in 1980-82 we moved to Fairlawn, OH...then back to MO and from 1990-1996 moved back to OH again (Stow, that time)...finally settled back in MO and reside here to this day, not far from my mother, sister and brother and the rest of the Dill family. I\'m happily single now, and I travel back to OH (Solon and Stow areas) a few times a year, as my older son, his wife and their twins (my first precious Grandbabies) and my daughter and Aunt and cousins still live there. In the 80’s, I obtained my Medical Tech./ Phys. Assistant degree here in MO and am currently self-employed in Private Duty Care. Well, now that I have almost written a novel, I had better stop here. If anyone would like to email, feel free...I would love to correspond with some of my former Tallmadge friends.

p.s.

I was wondering if you knew Jeff Gooch (Tallmadge class of 1968) and if you might know how he is doing. He was a good friend of mine before I moved to Missouri and we lost contact over the years. (I almost travelled back to Ohio to attend the Prom (1968) with him, but my boyfriend here, didn't appreciate the thought, so that idea was tossed). Thanks for your time and I do want to mention that the Reunion site that you have managed is great!

Well, take care now! God bless to you and yours.

Update 8/9/06.

My sister, Gail (’63) came across this site and emailed it to me. I spent hours reading through it; John, you did a fantastic job! I graduated in 1967 and went on to get my degree from Kent State in 1971. I have been married to Roy (Cuyahoga Falls, class of ’65) for 33 years (in fact, John, you played at our wedding!) and have two sweet daughters, Erin (29) and Heather (26). This year we became first time grandparents on July 5th to little Avery Claire. Most of my married life I was a stay at home mom until my girls had the nerve to grow up. I have also worked as a children’s librarian but am currently a credentialing coordinator for HealthSouth. Due to Roy’s job, I lived in Cuyahoga Falls 13 years, Atlanta 10, Hudson 4, Detroit 1 long, long year and moved to Birmingham 5 years ago. I plan to stay in the south forever!

Thanks for remembering my mom, Dee Buente. She was brilliant. She was a tough teacher, even on her own daughters, always expecting the best from her students. It’s hard to believe she passed 38 years ago. She was a fantastic lady and I miss her still.

I am still in touch with Rita Rotondo and Friedje van Gils, but other than that, don’t know where any of my old friends are. I have bittersweet memories of Tallmadge High, as I am sure you all do. My favorite memories include skipping class to paint signs for Pep Club and tooling around in Friedje’s VW bug. Little did we know how easy life was then!

Update 8/14/06.

I don't know if you remember me, some time in my life I was known as "Judy" vanGils; you also knew my brother Gee (Gerard). Claire Buente- Straight sent me the link to the '66 page you made.

Hope you're doing well! I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I run a school and art center (read all about it at our web page, www.escueladelsol.org).

Nice to see your photo and catch up a bit.

Update 9/5/09.

I spent a lot of time with some members of this class during 65-66. My brother is Mike Shuman and I was married for about 25 years to Nelson Leatherwood. I remember dancing to music played by Mike's band at the dances and a fun trip/overnight stay with some of the girls when the baseball team went to State.

Great job on this site, John! It's fun to check in with the hometown crowd every now and then.
